May I take a moment to marvel at the unexplainable?
In Matthew 27:51-57 several phenomenon occur. At the time of Jesus’ death, the veil in the temple is torn in two from top to bottom, the earth shook and rocks were split. A great upheaval was taking place. Tombs were opened and many bodies of the saints were raised. Yet they did not leave their tombs and go into the city until after Jesus’ resurrection. There, they appeared to the living.
What happened to these resurrected saints? Who were they? Were they part of the crowd that Jesus preached the good news to between the cross and his resurrection? Very likely.
The centurion who commanded those who were keeping guard over Jesus declared, “Truly, this was the Son of God.” Were they the guards at the cross or at the tomb or both? Were they at the tombs when all the other saints made their journey into the city? We aren’t specifically told.
Yet in all this, we can conclude at least one thing. Heaven has touched earth and will never be the same.
